Read To Me Monday

Yesterday Niagara finally joined the rest of Canada as we experienced our first snowfall of the season. Mr. B’s eyes were full of wonder as this is the first snowfall he’s ever really “experienced” since he was just a few months old last winter. Of course, being in one of Canada’s “hot spots”, none of it stuck and all we have is green grass covered in crunchy leaves again, but that first snowfall is all it takes to put people in the right frame of mind to face winter and get into the Christmas spirit!

Miss J is learning words left, right and center, but still insists that she “can’t read the story” on her own. Sometimes, to encourage her to participate in the storytelling, we scrap the text and just tell the story by “reading the pictures”. This can be a TON of fun – interpreting the images can lead to wild and crazy adventures (and can also give you a break from reading the same old text over and over again too!).

Some stories are actually wordless. This week’s children’s book is one of our family’s “winter favourites”. It’s about a little boy and his snowman and the adventures the go on as they explore each other’s worlds. In the award winning story The Snowman, author Raymond Briggs takes his readers on a wonderful adventure using more than 175 gently coloured images that are neatly arranged to illustrate this awesome little winter adventure that starts in the yard and home of the little boy and continues on a grand adventure. It’s a beautiful story and, as promised, one that can be extended in any number of fun ways to increase the learning for your little ones!

Family Travels: Flying

Lady V. is an awesome traveler. When we lived in Ontario she flew oodles as we visited family in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Now that we live on the East Coast we do not have to spend our summer traveling “home”, yay! Earlier this year we took a family trip to Calgary and I just attempted my first solo flight with both kids, Lady V., who is 4 and Mr. Man who is 10 months old. While traveling with kids means a less leisurely flight, I have found a system that works for me and most importantly works for the kids! Continue reading

Family Travels: The Road Trip

The Road Trip. Potentially every parent’s worst nightmare.

Living in the Niagara Region of Ontario puts us approximately 19 hours from both of our families. Hubby’s family live in PEI, mine up in Northwestern Ontario. Far. Previous to living in Niagara, we lived in Montreal. Still far. Continue reading

Family Travels: Snacks-on-the-Go

Snacks are a surefire way to end up spending more than you want to on a road/camping trip. Small little morsels “to tide you over to the next meal” can be found right at checkout counters and are SO tempting (and SO expensive!!). Again, with a bit of pre-planning, the brunt of the “snack bill” can be avoided. Continue reading

Family Travels: Camping

The biggest thing that has always bothered me about camping is that our intentions have always been to “save money” by tenting rather than staying in hotels … but as with anything these days (parenting, camping, you name it!) we are made to feel like we need all the latest gear to make the most of the experience. Camping can, in fact, end up costing just as much and even more than staying in hotels Continue reading

Shopping Survival Tips

God knows one of the most peaceful times in a parent’s week is potentially the peace and freedom from screaming, whining kids a solo trip to the grocery store brings. I often find myself wandering ALL of the aisles at an extremely slow pace just savouring the moment and extending the “me time” as long as possible! It’s lovely to be able to carefully choose the perfect fruits and vegetables without the tower of oranges plummeting to the floor, Continue reading

Market Fresh Perspective

Yesterday, Miss J’s preschool went to Commisso’s Fresh Foods in Niagara Falls for a tour. The kids got to visit each department and learn a bit about how the foods in each department are handled. They tried samples of cheese, shrimp, persimmon, and at the end of the tour, they all got to eat pizza and gelato in the store’s cafe. Continue reading

You Are My Sunshine

Dandelions are for all intents and purposes a very cumbersome, interfering, annoying weed. They grow uncontrollably, spread like a wildfire during a drought and pop up strong and healthy in places most normal plants couldn’t dream of surviving in. Growing up, my parents’ lawn was always a battleground. Good vs. Evil. Man vs. Nature. Us vs. the dandelions. It was nothing a little weed-n-feed couldn’t handle, but there always seemed to be one or two that got away. Sneaky. Stealthy. Surviving against all odds. Continue reading

Stroller Survival Kit

Today was a GORGEOUS day! 20 degrees Celsius (for you American-folk out there, that’s about 68 degrees Fahrenheit). This morning before my Kindermusik class, I took the kids for a walk. Then, after Kindermusik, we went for another walk. Then, after lunch, we went for yet another walk! In total, Miss J and I have walked for about 90min today – wonderful!

Earth Day 2012

Miss J has been learning all about Earth Day and at preschool, celebrated “Earth Week” but doing many crafts and activities that surrounded this theme. She’s been asking a lot about caring for the earth and specifically asking how she can help make the earth a healthier place. Then, last week, she declared to me in all her 3 year old wisdom that we had to take care of our neighbourhood by picking up litter.
