Read To Me Monday

Yesterday Niagara finally joined the rest of Canada as we experienced our first snowfall of the season. Mr. B’s eyes were full of wonder as this is the first snowfall he’s ever really “experienced” since he was just a few months old last winter. Of course, being in one of Canada’s “hot spots”, none of it stuck and all we have is green grass covered in crunchy leaves again, but that first snowfall is all it takes to put people in the right frame of mind to face winter and get into the Christmas spirit!

Miss J is learning words left, right and center, but still insists that she “can’t read the story” on her own. Sometimes, to encourage her to participate in the storytelling, we scrap the text and just tell the story by “reading the pictures”. This can be a TON of fun – interpreting the images can lead to wild and crazy adventures (and can also give you a break from reading the same old text over and over again too!).

Some stories are actually wordless. This week’s children’s book is one of our family’s “winter favourites”. It’s about a little boy and his snowman and the adventures the go on as they explore each other’s worlds. In the award winning story The Snowman, author Raymond Briggs takes his readers on a wonderful adventure using more than 175 gently coloured images that are neatly arranged to illustrate this awesome little winter adventure that starts in the yard and home of the little boy and continues on a grand adventure. It’s a beautiful story and, as promised, one that can be extended in any number of fun ways to increase the learning for your little ones!

This Is Thursday

A single moment captured…
a glimpse into our sometimes peaceful,
but often delightfully crazy & blessed lives.

My friend Kristy and I have had good intentions for several weeks since Kim posted about her Felted Sweater Wreath – except we wanted “real fake” flowers instead of the felted sweater – FINALLY we managed to assemble our wreaths the other day – so mine is finally hanging on my door and will come down December 1st to be replaced by my Christmas one.

The neat thing about this wreath is that we only tucked the flowers in and didn’t glue them – I fully intend on buying some spring flowers and replacing the fall ones when the time comes! Even the “M” can be moved as it is just being held by heavy duty twist ties!

A Little Bit of Halloween

While my pinterest board and craft room are filled with ideas, reality appears in the form of an adorable one year old who is not really into sleeping. Combine that with my innate desire to attempt to be organized and have a clean house and chaos ensues. For example, on Tuesday at 12:25pm as Lady V. was putting on her shoes to go to preschool it dawned on me that it was her Halloween party day. Oops. Preschool starts at 1pm, and is a 15 minutes drive away…..and I was still in my PJs. True Story. Continue reading

Read To Me Monday

We’ve featured Barbara Reid on our blog before – her book The Party is a fantastic story and you can read Kim’s review to learn more about this fun story! Today, I share Reid’s book Picture a Tree. My mother is an amazing artist and Miss J absolutely LOVES quality “painting time” with Nanny when they have the chance to visit one another. The most amazing thing about spending time with Nanny is that she has this incredible ability to help you connect with those deep corners of your imagination Continue reading

Felted Sweater Fall Wreath

I posted this morning about how I used a felted sweater that I found at a thrift store to make this adorable headband for Lady V. The rest of that sweater became a fall wreath for my front door. I really like the rustic look of the grapevine wreath, twine and wool. It definitely perks up our entry way and makes things look all cozy & fall-like! It is an easy project and very budget friendly if you use thrifted wool sweaters.

Recycled Sweater Headband

A few years ago I used recycled wool sweaters to make Christmas ornaments, I went a little over board with felting sweaters which left me with a huge bin of sweaters that I have tucked away. I have used them to make Christmas stockings and Christmas ornaments. This week I used a bit of my stash to make a headband and a fall wreath.  Continue reading

Birthday Banner Tutorial

I love parties and I love finding ways to decorate that can be re-used, re-cycled or re-purposed in some way. The most recent birthday in our home was no exception. We spent a few hours (thanks Mom!) getting things ready for Mr. Man’s big day and I was really happy with how his birthday banner turned out. After his party I hung it above his crib, sort of a mobile I suppose. Read on to see how you can make your own birthday banner….

Fun Jack-o-Lantern Quesadillas

As many of you know, I’m constantly on the hunt for fun, easy Bento Lunch ideas and today, I think I came up with a winner (at least Miss J thinks so, and since she’s the #1 critic in this house, that’s all that matters!!). A twist on the conventional chicken/cheese quesadilla that will both fit in the bento lunchbox and be fun, appealing and super cute! Continue reading

A Rainbow Dash Birthday Cake

Last year, I punked out on Miss J’s birthday cake (I usually make it every year) because I had a newborn in the house – Mr. B was born just a month before Miss J was to turn 3. So this year, I wanted to make up for it. She asked for a “Rainbow Dash”-themed 4th Birthday and since her birthday parties are usually spent running around in the backyard with friends, the “theme” part of her party is usually found in the cake. So this year, I decided to “go big” and make her a My Little Pony – Rainbow Dash birthday cake! Continue reading

Change Table Storage

Before Mr. Man was born, I claimed this dresser out of my parents basement (yay!), but it needed a makeover.  I was in full on nesting mode but not really in any state to be painting, well I thought I was, but then nap time would call….. Thankfully my Mom entertains my crazy ideas and offered to paint this dresser for me. It still needs a bit of TLC, the drawers don’t close properly, but I couldn’t wait to start using it. Almost one year later I finally got around to adding a bit of storage.  Continue reading
