Rain gutter planters have become a popular way to garden in small spaces. Doing a search online will give you oodles of ideas. I like to keep our deck very kid-friendly so Lady V can play outside solo while I am inside with the baby. I didn’t want to take up valuable space so I came up with this Railing Planter. I really wish I had a more snazzy name…hmmm.
First I sent my ever patient hubby to the hardware store. We seem to spend a lot of time there lately. He purchased a length of rain gutter and attached it to the outside of our deck railing with a few screws. It is much sturdier than I had thought it would be, but duh, it is meant to be hung like this!
Admittedly I find using power tools somewhat therapeutic, so I spent a few moments adding drainage holes.
I may have gotten a bit carried away, but there are holes randomly spaced along the entire length of gutter.
Finally just add potting soil and plant! I added thyme, oregano, basil, and chives. There are also a few nasturtium seeds and lettuce seeds planted. We will add more lettuce seeds every few weeks.
Now we wait and watch! Although I am thinking I need much cuter plant-markers…
